Why does my jaw sometimes make noise?
If you hear a popping, clicking, or similar noise when you move your jaw, you may be experiencing the symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD).
This condition happens when the jaw joint, or TMJ, gets sore or has suffered an injury. These joints do a lot of work since you depend on them to talk, eat, and drink. When you have TMD, even these simple daily actions become difficult or even painful.
At our office, Dr. Matthew Cavendish may be able to relieve your discomfort with an easy, non-invasive treatment. An occlusal splint is a customized oral device that fits over your teeth and is designed to take the pressure off your TMJ to allow the joints to rest and heal. Some patients also benefit from medications that help those joints relax as well as relaxation techniques like meditation, which helps relax your entire body, including your jaw joints.
If you notice soreness in your jaw or you wake up with headaches or neck pain, you may have a malfunction of the TMJ. Please call our Phoenix, AZ dental office to arrange a consultation and exam with Dr. Cavendish so we can provide you with the relief you need and protect your general oral health.
